WannaCry/WannaCrypt ransomware

Published on 24 May 2017

Ransomware, one of the oldest cyber threats has been making a comeback in recent years since its first documented case over 20 years ago, largely due to advancement in technology especially cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, Monero, Litecoin, giving ransomware attackers a way to receive payment that is virtually impossible to trace.

Today, a piece of ransomware no longer simply locks a file, but also encrypts the content of the file it has infected, this means even if the victim is able to remove the ransomware, his/her data remain inaccessible without acquiring the decryption key.

“WannaCry” is the latest variant of Ransomware and one of the largest ransomware attack in history, infecting tens of thousands of computer systems across 104 countries in just 24 hours, showing the world once again just how unprepared we are against cyber attacks.

Other than OS patch and anti-virus updates, there are many other practice considerations can help an organisation to reduce the risk of future attack and the impact of a ransomware breach.
