Emerging new economy industries are rapidly changing the way people live and work. There is an increasing number of innovative companies wishing to be connected with the capital market so that their innovative ideas can be put into practice and the business value can be monetised. Although many of them have high growth potential, they may not have satisfied the traditional financial requirements required for listing in a traditional stock market.

In respond to this increasing need and to increase competitiveness of the Hong Kong capital market, the HKEx had introduced Chapter 18C, a new listing mechanism to entice technology start-ups to raise capital. Chapter 18C had been in effect since 31 March 2023. 

The HKEx had defined specialist technology companies as companies that are primarily engaging in the research and development of, and the commercialisation of, products and/or services with science and/or technology applied thereto (the specialist technology) within an acceptable sector of a specialist technology industry.   

Leveraged on the success in turning Hong Kong into a hub for biotechnology companies to raise capital in 2018 by introducing Chapter 18A to the Listing Rules, HKEx is going to replicate another success story with Chapter 18C in the specialist technology space.
