According to the Emissions Gap Report published in November 2022 by the United Nations Environment Programme, current national policies will see global warming reach 2.8°C by the end of the century. To meet the Paris targets, emissions in 2030 would have to be reduced by 30-45% below the levels projected under current policies. This presents a compelling scope for business action to align to governmental commitments on global climate mandates and allow for systematic integration into mainstream sustainable development.

With the latest Global Risk Report 2023 issued by the World Economic Forum in January 2023, while in the short-term (two years from now), two out of the top five risks are relating to climate change namely ranked second – Natural disaster and extreme weather events and ranked fourth – Failure to mitigate climate change; in the long-term (over a period of 10 years), four out of the top five risks are relating to climate change including ranked first – Failure to mitigate climate change and second – Failure of climate change adaption.

There is no time to waste. Organisations need to take urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions from their operations, including phase out fossil fuel consumption, phase down the use of coal, reduce methane emissions and align targets with the 1.5°C. Such a mandate unlocks significant opportunities for businesses to build resilience, innovate and secure future profitability.

BDO is organising a hybrid forum to give you the background about setting science-based target and the consideration for transition to low carbon pathway.

Our sharing will be divided into two parts. In this ESG Forum Part 1, we will be covering the followings:

  • Setting science-based target for financial institutions
  • Climate resilience and low carbon strategy
  • ESG reporting trend and assurance

The second part of the hybrid forum will be held later. Please stay tuned!
