The Japanese real estate price has been increasing slightly because of the gradual recovery of the Japanese economy. A lot of investors are seeking opportunity to invest into the Japanese real estate market. However, it is difficult for foreign investors to understand the Japanese taxation and relevant laws because of the complicated tax system and laws in Japan.

This seminar aims to help you update the latest knowledge related to investment into the Japanese real estate market.

About the Speakers & Moderator

MODERATOR - AGNES CHEUNG, Director & Head of Tax, BDO Hong Kong

Agnes has extensive experiences in providing Hong Kong and international tax planning services to multinational companies as well as Chinese state-owned enterprises in different industries. In particular, Agnes is experienced in advising group restructuring, merger and acquisition and other cross border transactions involving Hong Kong, the PRC and other Asia Pacific countries.

Agnes also specialises in the asset management industry. She has advised numerous private equity, venture capital and hedge funds on their formation issues, top side and downstream structuring, field audit and tax investigation by the IRD. She is specialised in the Hong Kong Offshore Funds Law and was heavily involved in lobbying the Hong Kong Government on the new Offshore Funds Law for Private Equity Funds, which was enacted in July 2015.

Agnes has acted as a technical reviewer in assisting Wolters Kluwer to review the Hong Kong Master Tax Guide from 2008 to 2016. She is a frequent contributor of articles on international tax journals, local magazines and newspapers.

Agnes is a Hong Kong Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Taxation Faculty Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is also a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and member of its Tax Subcommittee, fellow and council member of the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong.

 

SPEAKER - TOSHI NAKAJIMA, Marketing Coordinator, BDO Japan Tax

Toshi began his career in accounting in 2005, where he worked for a consulting firm located in the New York/New Jersey area. While working in the US, he became interested in International tax in Asia and in 2009, joined BDO Tax Co. in Japan. Currently, he is BDO Tax Co.’s lead contact for expatriate tax services and also involved in areas such as transfer pricing, corporate tax and other international tax services. His experience at BDO Tax Co. includes transfer pricing, individual/corporate tax and other international tax and accounting services. Toshi is also the lead contact for BDO Tax Co.’s global services and business services outsourcing team.

Toshi holds a Bachelor in Science degree in International Business Studies from Temple University.

 

SPEAKER - YASUHISA KINUKAWA, Solicitor (Hong Kong) and Attorney-at-Law (Japan and New York), Li & Partners (Legal Professional Corporation CAST)

Yasuhisa has experience in various legal practices in Japan, including but not limited to civil (including real estate, commercial, and corporate disputes) or criminal litigation, bankruptcy procedures or, inheritance and domestic matters. Yasuhisa has also handled a number of cases concerning cross-border transactions or investments out of an into Japan, Hong Kong, PRC, and South East Asian countries. Recently, as a dual-licensed lawyer (admitted in Hong Kong and Japan) working in Hong Kong, he gives professional advice to more and more Hong Kong clients on real property or corporate investments into Japan. 

Yasuhisa obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from University of Tokyo in Japan and Master of Laws degree (Asian and Comparative laws, LLM) from University of Washington, School of Law in the USA. Yasuhisa was admitted as an attorney-at-law in Japan (2004) and the State of New York (2010) and was also admitted as a solicitor of Hong Kong (2014). Yasuhisa is proficient in English and Japanese.

 

SPEAKER - AKIRA UETSUHARA, Senior Vice President and Head of Investment Development Department, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, Limited, Hong Kong Branch

Akira joined SuMi TRUST in 2013. Previously he spent more than 26 years at BNP Paribas and has held investment, structuring and management roles in both Tokyo and New York. His last position at BNPP was the Executive Director of Financial Institutions Group Japan. 

He holds an MBA in Finance from Waseda University, Tokyo Japan and a Bachelor of Commerce from Doshisha University, Kyoto Japan. 

He is a Certified International Investment Analyst and Chartered Member of the Securities Analysts Association of Japan.
