Technology Updates - Issue 1/2022

Innovation and technology are drivers for organisation growth and the key to enhance competitiveness of different industries. Just as technology rapidly evolves, so does the sector. In every issue of our ‘Technology Updates’, it will include the latest updates from cybersecurity, emerging technology and data privacy.

Seven technology industry predictions for 2022

The technology sector spent 2021 adjusting to the radical changes catalysed by the events of 2020. While the pandemic has underscored the importance of tech, it has created new risks and priorities for the industry.

It introduces the seven trends BDO expects to shape 2022 and beyond.

Prediction:

1. Techno-nationalism on the rise

2. Nomadic workforce will grow as top tech talent is harder to pin down

3. Supply chain component shortages force US technology firms to reduce reliance on China and reevaluate just-in-time manufacturing practices

4. Multinational tech companies to re-evaluate business models in response to global tax changes

5. With trust in tech firms reaching an all-time low, regulators will make moves to improve safety, privacy and consolidation in the industry

6. Edge computing to complement the cloud as AI processing moves onto the chip

7. Demand for tech M&A deals to exceed record highs

Don't copy-paste commands from webpages — you can get hacked

It is common for experienced users to copy commonly used commands from a webpage (ahem, StackOverflow) and paste them into their applications, a Windows command prompt or a Linux terminal.

But a webpage could be covertly replacing the contents of what goes on your clipboard, and what actually ends up being copied to your clipboard would be vastly different from what you had intended to copy.

Worse, without the necessary due diligence, the users may only realise their mistake after pasting and executing the text, at which point it may be too late.

New Y2K22 bug on Microsoft Exchange server

As digital calendars around the world changed to 01.01.2022, Microsoft customers found their Exchange servers stopped processing emails.

Microsoft says it is aware of a programming flaw which saw some customers' Exchange servers stop processing emails just as the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve.

System administrators, who are sharing workarounds on social media, have dubbed the bug Y2K22 - in the style of the Y2K bug which affected some computers at exactly the same time 22 years earlier.
